White House chief of staff Susie Wiles met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Friday to discuss the company’s new AI model, Mythos, according to multiple reports. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was also present at the meeting, a source familiar with the matter told CNBC.
The White House described the conversation as “productive and constructive,” noting that discussions centered on opportunities for collaboration and shared approaches to address challenges in scaling advanced technology. Officials emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with safety considerations.
Anthropic confirmed in a statement that the meeting included senior administration officials and explored how the San Francisco-based company and the U.S. Government can work together on key priorities such as cybersecurity, maintaining America’s leadership in the AI race, and advancing AI safety. The company said it is “looking forward to continuing these discussions.”
The engagement comes after a period of tension between the Trump administration and Anthropic, which has advocated for safeguards in AI development to minimize risks while maximizing economic and national security benefits. Earlier this year, President Trump had blacklisted the company and declared his administration would “not do business with them again,” citing national security concerns.
When asked about Amodei’s visit during a press appearance in Phoenix, Arizona, President Trump responded with surprise, saying he had “no idea” the CEO was present at the White House meeting.
The Mythos model, announced earlier this month, has drawn attention from federal officials for its potential implications in national security and economic applications. As AI systems grow more capable, government agencies are increasingly engaging with leading developers to evaluate how such technologies might be integrated into public sector operations while ensuring appropriate safeguards.
