Nobel-Winning Research Takes Center Stage at International Immunology Day 2026
The global medical community will observe International Immunology Day on April 29, 2026, with a particular focus on the critical role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in managing the body’s immune response. This year’s theme highlights a breakthrough in immunology that was recognized with the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
To mark the occasion, the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) is hosting a specialized scientific session titled “Regulatory T Cells to the Rescue of Inflammation.” The event, which coincides with European Immunization Week, aims to explore how these essential cells help balance the immune system and mitigate harmful inflammation.
Understanding the mechanisms of regulatory T cells is vital for public health, as these cells act as a necessary minority that prevents the immune system from overreacting, which can otherwise lead to chronic inflammation or autoimmune disorders.
The symposium, organized by the Immunology Area of the National Center for Microbiology (CNM), will feature a series of expert presentations covering a diverse range of immunological challenges:
- Hyperinflammation: Marjorie Pion, from the Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, will discuss the therapeutic potential of thymic Treg cells.
- Vaccine Development: José Carlos Solana (CNM-ISCIII) will present current research into vaccines for leishmaniasis.
- Diagnostic Innovation: Inmaculada Márquez (CNM-ISCIII) will share the development and validation of an in vitro diagnostic test designed to monitor cellular immunity against cytomegalovirus.
- Immune Presentation: Andrea Rivera (CNM-ISCIII) will examine Ribo-seq open reading frames within the HLA class I ligandome and how their immune presentation depends on specific alleles.
- TCR Paradoxes: Balbino Alarcón (CBMSO-CSIC) will provide insights into the paradox of high specificity, high selectivity, and low affinity in T-cell receptors (TCR).
The scientific session is scheduled for April 29, 2026, from 9:15 a.m. To 12:30 p.m. It will be held at the National Center for Microbiology in Room 1 (Building 53). For those unable to attend in person, the proceedings will be streamed live via the Instituto de Salud Carlos III’s official YouTube channel.
The event is being coordinated by Elena Lorente, Inmaculada Moreno, and Maribel Cortegano. This annual gathering underscores the ongoing commitment to advancing immunological research and its practical application in clinical healthcare.
