Czech Republic retailers will see varied operating hours during the upcoming May holidays. While most stores will be open on May 1, 2026, for the Labor Day celebration, businesses will be closed on May 8, 2026, for Victory in Europe Day.
According to reports, shops, including shopping centers and grocery chains, are permitted to operate on May 1st, as the law regarding opening hours does not apply to this particular holiday. Still, it is recommended that customers verify the opening hours of specific stores, as there is no legal requirement for businesses to open on Labor Day.
May 1st was officially established in 1889 to commemorate the victims of the Haymarket affair of 1886, when American workers in Chicago began striking for better working conditions, specifically an eight-hour workday.

Exceptions to this rule include gas stations, pharmacies, and shops located in airports and train stations. Some shopping centers may remain open to allow access to smaller stores, and delivery services will continue to operate.
The end of World War II in Europe is commemorated on May 8th in most European countries, marking the date the German surrender came into effect. In the Czech Republic, this day is observed as Victory in Europe Day.
