Chinese CDC Issues May Health Alert: Key Precautions for Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease and Mosquito-Borne Illnesses

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a comprehensive health protection advisory for May, urging the public to remain vigilant against several infectious diseases. The alert highlights a range of concerns, including mosquito-borne illnesses and pediatric infections, as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate seasonal public health risks.

Among the primary concerns for the month are hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika virus, avian influenza, mpox, hemorrhagic fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, and meningococcal meningitis. These seasonal warnings help parents and caregivers take proactive steps to reduce transmission during peak periods.

Protecting Children from Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

A significant portion of the advisory focuses on hand, foot, and mouth disease, a common acute infectious illness primarily affecting children aged five and under. Caused by various enteroviruses, the disease is characterized by fever and the appearance of rashes or blisters on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth. Some children may also experience a loss of appetite, runny nose, or coughing.

Health officials noted that the virus spreads through the respiratory tract—via coughing, sneezing, and droplets—as well as through the digestive tract. Transmission can also occur through direct contact with a patient’s oral or nasal secretions, the fluid from blisters, or by touching contaminated objects and surfaces.

To prevent the spread of HFMD, the CDC recommends several hygiene and safety measures:

  • Maintain strict hygiene habits, ensure living spaces are well-ventilated, and wash hands frequently.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect toys and frequently touched objects. Feeding bottles, pacifiers, and tableware used by infants and young children should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before and after use. Reusable diapers must be washed, sun-dried, or disinfected promptly.
  • Avoid contact with infected children and do not share personal items such as towels or utensils. Any items used by an infected child should be disinfected separately to prevent cross-infection.

The advisory also emphasizes the role of immunization. The EV-A71 vaccine is highlighted as an effective tool for preventing HFMD caused by the EV-A71 virus and significantly reducing the occurrence of severe cases. To ensure timely protection, officials encourage parents to complete the full vaccination course for children before they reach 12 months of age. This emphasis on vaccination underscores the ongoing effort to mitigate the impact of highly contagious pediatric illnesses.

Managing Mosquito-Borne Threats

The May alert also warns against several diseases transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, specifically dengue fever, chikungunya, and the Zika virus.

Dengue fever, caused by the dengue virus, can manifest as sudden fever, widespread body pain, rashes, bleeding, and a decrease in white blood cell counts. In severe instances, the disease can lead to organ failure, shock, or death.

Chikungunya, caused by the chikungunya virus, typically presents as fever and rashes accompanied by joint pain. This pain frequently affects the modest joints of the hands and feet and can persist for several weeks in some patients.

The advisory also includes the Zika virus as a key mosquito-borne threat to monitor during this period.
