Arizona Cold Case Solved: Woman Located Alive 32 Years After Disappearance

A decades-old mystery in Arizona has come to an unexpected conclusion with the discovery of a woman who vanished as a teenager more than 30 years ago.

Christina Marie Plante, now 44, was located and identified this week, according to a press release from the Gila County Sheriff’s Office. The resolution of this case underscores the critical role of evolving forensic technology and the persistence of specialized units in providing closure to long-term missing persons cases.

Plante first disappeared on May 15, 1994, from a small mountain community in the Payson-Star Valley area, northeast of Phoenix. At the time, she was 13 years old and had left her home to visit a nearby stable where her horse was kept.

The disappearance was initially classified as “missing in danger and under suspicious circumstances,” triggering an extensive search operation. Despite interviews with witnesses, volunteers, and police, the trail went cold, though the case was never formally closed.

The breakthrough occurred after the investigation was transferred to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit. By leveraging modern investigative methods, advanced technology, and a detailed re-analysis of the case, investigators were able to uncover new leads.

Officials noted that Plante’s information had remained in national missing children databases throughout the intervening decades, which eventually facilitated the breakthrough.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 2, 2026, the sheriff’s office confirmed that Plante’s identity has been verified and her status as a missing person is officially resolved.
