The Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) has officially scheduled the second auction of 77 high-value, two-character “.vn” national domain names for June 22–23, 2026. This follow-up to the initial March auction aims to further formalize the market for digital assets and improve the allocation of scarce Internet resources.
Expanding the Market for Two-Character Digital Assets
Following a successful first auction in March 2026, where 78% of the 50 available two-character domains were sold, the Ministry of Science and Technology has confirmed a second wave of 77 domain names. These specific identifiers are classified as “special resources” due to their extreme scarcity and high strategic value in the digital ecosystem. According to reporting by VnExpress, the auction is part of a broader government initiative to enhance the exploitation of national Internet assets and encourage businesses to secure recognizable, short-form digital identities.

The auction process is designed to be transparent and competitive. Participants are required to place a deposit of one million VND, with a starting price for each domain set at 10 million VND and bid increments of one million VND. The agency expects the event to reflect the market’s ongoing demand for concise, memorable web addresses that facilitate brand building and digital presence.
Strategic Value of Short-Form Domains
For many enterprises, these domains are more than just web addresses; they are considered “strategic digital assets” that provide a competitive edge in an increasingly crowded online environment. Thái Hữu Lý, Head of the Service Development Department at VNNIC, stated that the auctions serve to position the “.vn” extension as a vital component of digital transformation strategies. As noted by BaoMoi, the high interest in these names is driven by their brevity and ease of recognition, which are essential for businesses looking to expand their reach both domestically and internationally.

The selection of domains for the June auction includes a diverse range of categories to suit different industry needs.
- Branded Identifiers: Abbreviations for established brands, such as mb.vn, lg.vn, or hc.vn.
- Industry-Specific Domains: Names that suggest a sector, such as ot.vn for automotive, dd.vn for mobile, or fa.vn for finance.
- Modern Alphanumeric Combinations: Short “letter-number” sequences like y1, m2, f5, or g7, which are particularly popular among technology startups.
- Cultural Trends: Domains that resonate with social and digital culture, such as 2k.vn, ok.vn, or hi.vn.
In the first auction round held in March, the market appetite for these assets was significant. The domain mb.vn commanded the highest price, fetching nearly 1.6 billion VND. Other notable results included ok.vn, which closed at 217 million VND, and hi.vn, which reached 153 million VND. According to the Government Portal, the upcoming auction will also include a small number of domains that were successfully bid on during the first round but were not ultimately paid for by the winners.
Modernizing Digital Resource Allocation
The move toward public, competitive auctions marks a departure from traditional administrative allocation, aiming to ensure that limited digital resources are distributed to those who value them most. By creating a standardized, regulated environment for these sales, the government is effectively turning these identifiers into liquid, tradable assets.

This initiative is part of a long-term goal to foster a more reliable and professional Internet landscape in Vietnam. By providing a clear legal framework for ownership, the authorities are encouraging companies to view their domain names as long-term investments rather than temporary rentals. As of May 2026, the focus remains on ensuring that the upcoming June auction proceeds with the same level of transparency and order that characterized the initial launch earlier this year.
