University of Charleston Women’s Soccer Draws with Wheeling University
The University of Charleston women’s soccer team and Wheeling University battled to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Charleston struck first in the 5th minute with a goal from Sydney Crowe, capitalizing on a rebound after her initial header hit the post. Wheeling quickly responded, leveling the score at 1-1 following a Charleston defensive miscue. Both teams created scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half, with strong saves from both goalkeepers, including a key stop by Charleston’s Ines Degli Esposti. The second half was a physical contest, with both sides struggling to gain a decisive advantage, and both teams receiving yellow cards late in the match.
Crowe’s goal was her third of the week, continuing a strong scoring run for the forward. This draw keeps Charleston in contention for a top spot in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) standings. The MEC is part of the larger NCAA Division II athletic structure.
The Golden Eagles will continue their road stretch with a game against Fairmont State University on Wednesday, October 15, at 7:00 PM. For more information on the University of Charleston’s athletic programs, visit their official athletics website.
