Britney Spears Responds to Ex-Husband Kevin Federline’s Memoir Allegations
Pop star Britney Spears publicly addressed accusations made by her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, in excerpts from his upcoming memoir, alleging a pattern of “gaslighting” and disputing claims about their relationship and interactions with their sons.
Yesterday evening, Spears took to X (formerly Twitter) to respond to the excerpts, stating, “The constant gaslighting from ex-husband is extremely hurtful and exhausting.” She continued, expressing her desire to have a relationship with her sons, Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, and alleging they “have always witnessed the lack of respect shown by own father for me.” Spears also claimed limited recent contact with her sons, stating “one son” had only seen her for “45 min in the past year” and the other only had “4 visits in the past 5 years.”
Federline’s memoir, titled “You Thought You Knew,” is scheduled for release on October 21st and contains allegations including an instance where Spears was allegedly holding a knife while checking on her sleeping sons. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Federline expressed fear for his sons’ future, citing what he described as Spears’ “erratic behavior.” Spears’ representative responded to the claims, stating that the release of information coincides with the end of child support payments from Spears to Federline, which at one point reached $40,000 per month. The end of the conservatorship that controlled many aspects of Spears’ life for 13 years, finally concluded in 2021, and has been a subject of intense public scrutiny, as detailed in The New York Times.
Spears concluded her statement expressing her love for her sons and defending herself against accusations regarding her mental health and alleged substance use, stating, “I am actually a pretty intelligent woman who has been trying to live a sacred and private life the past 5 years.” A representative for Federline has not yet responded to requests for comment.
Federline is continuing to promote the book with further interviews, and Spears has indicated she will be more proactive in setting boundaries regarding contact with her sons moving forward.
