Lipscomb University Names Kevin Carroll Men’s Basketball Head Coach, Emphasizes Process-Oriented Approach

Lipscomb University’s new men’s basketball coach, Kevin Carroll, outlined a process-oriented philosophy today, prioritizing player development and cultural values as he takes the helm of the program.

Carroll, speaking on October 20, 2024, stated he focuses on three key areas: ensuring players execute the team’s strategies, fostering positive experiences for athletes, and instilling a strong team culture. “I’m a very process-oriented person,” Carroll said. “I’ve never really gone into seasons saying, ‘I hope we can do this or do that.’” He added that his previous head coaching tenures at three different institutions resulted in record-breaking win totals within three years, but emphasized that success stemmed from focusing on fundamental improvement rather than solely on outcomes. This approach comes as Lipscomb looks to build on its recent Atlantic Sun championship.

The Bisons roster features a mix of seven returning players, four transfers, and five freshmen, presenting both challenges and opportunities. Key newcomers include transfer guards Mateo Esmeraldo, previously with Carroll at Trevecca Nazarene, and Ethan Duncan, a Division II All-American from Lubbock Christian. Carroll highlighted Duncan as a “gifted scorer” and Esmeraldo as a dynamic point guard, noting his exceptional passing ability. However, the team faces a challenging non-conference schedule, including matchups against Vanderbilt, Marshall, Duke, and Cincinnati, as reported by ESPN.

Despite the roster turnover and tough schedule, Carroll intends to maintain a similar style of play to that of his predecessor, Lennie Acuff, emphasizing a fast-paced offense focused on maximizing possessions through three-pointers and free throws. He expects to quickly identify the players who will contribute most significantly through early-season competition. Carroll stated he hasn’t set specific goals but anticipates success will follow a commitment to the team’s core principles.

Carroll will continue to evaluate the team throughout the early season, with a focus on solidifying the roster and establishing a clear identity before the start of conference play.
