Lions Sign Edge Rusher Aidan Hutchinson to $180 Million Contract Extension
The Detroit Lions have secured star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson with a four-year contract extension worth $180 million, including $141 million guaranteed, his agent Mike McCartney announced today.
Hutchinson, 25, was originally drafted second overall by the Lions in 2022 out of the University of Michigan. Since entering the NFL, he has amassed 34.5 sacks and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2022. His performance reached new heights during the 2024 season before a Week 6 leg injury cut it short; at the time of the injury, he led the league in sacks, pressures, and pass-rush win rate. This extension solidifies a key piece of the Lions’ defensive future and prevents a potentially disruptive free agency period.
Lions General Manager Brad Holmes indicated earlier this year that extending Hutchinson was a priority, stating this summer, “We’ll definitely get some dialogue going soon… He’s looked great.” Holmes has consistently emphasized the importance of retaining homegrown talent, as evidenced by recent extensions for players like quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. The team has been proactive in locking up core players to long-term deals, mirroring a strategy seen across successful franchises like the San Francisco 49ers.
Despite the tibia and fibula fracture suffered against the Dallas Cowboys, Hutchinson reportedly impressed during training camp, demonstrating full recovery and continued dominance. The Lions have now extended nine key players to significant contracts, signaling a commitment to sustained contention. Team officials expect Hutchinson to continue to be a disruptive force on the defensive line for years to come.
