Remains of Hostage Returned to Israel Amid Ceasefire Progress
The remains of another hostage held in Gaza have been returned to Israel today, marking the 21st such return under the ongoing U.S.-brokered ceasefire and bringing the total number of confirmed deceased hostages to seven.
The Israeli military announced the transfer on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, but did not specify if the remains were those of a soldier, despite earlier reports from Hamas’s military wing claiming they had recovered the body of an Israeli soldier. Hamas has been returning one to three bodies every few days, a process they describe as complicated by the widespread devastation in Gaza. For each Israeli hostage returned, Israel has released the remains of 15 Palestinians, with 270 Palestinian bodies handed over so far, though fewer than half have been identified due to limited forensic resources in Gaza.
The current ceasefire, initiated on October 10, aims to de-escalate the deadliest and most destructive war in Israel’s history, triggered by the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. The conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over 68,800 Palestinians killed according to the Gaza Health Ministry, figures which Israel disputes but has not provided an alternative to. Efforts to increase aid delivery are ongoing, with the World Food Programme reaching one million people in Gaza with food parcels, though officials state that current border crossing limitations hinder full-scale aid efforts.
The United States is also drafting a U.N. Security Council resolution proposing a mandate for an international stabilization force in Gaza for at least two years, a move requiring extensive negotiations and international consensus. Israeli officials stated they will continue to work to secure the return of all remaining hostages and Palestinian remains.
