Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Playoff
Aaron Rai secured victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship today, defeating Tommy Fleetwood on the first playoff hole after a thrilling final round at Yas Links.
The 30-year-old Rai finished with a total of 263 after a five-under final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys, ultimately needing a birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the win. This marks Rai’s second Rolex Series title, following his 2020 Scottish Open victory – which also came in a playoff against Fleetwood. Fleetwood briefly held a one-shot lead with two holes remaining, but Rai battled back to force the playoff. This win significantly boosts Rai’s position in the world rankings and provides valuable points in the Race to Dubai.
Rory McIlroy mounted a stunning comeback with a final-round 62 – his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour – finishing one shot short in a tie for third alongside Nicolai Højgaard. “Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person,” Rai said. “To play with him the last two days was really special. You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Rai takes home a $1.5 million (£1.13m) prize. Tournament officials confirmed that the next event on the DP World Tour schedule is the Dubai Desert Classic, where Rai will look to continue his impressive form.
