Adriana Araújo, a celebrated voice in the world of Brazilian samba, has died at the age of 49. The singer passed away on Monday, March 2, in Belo Horizonte, following complications from a cerebral aneurysm she suffered on Saturday, February 29.
Araújo was hospitalized at the Odilon Behrens Hospital after collapsing at home. Initially taken to a local emergency care unit, doctors determined she had suffered a severe brain aneurysm. Her team announced the news on social media, stating that the hemorrhage was extensive and her condition was “very serious and irreversible.”
In a heartfelt statement, her team described Araújo as someone with “an open embrace, easy smile, generous heart and a joy for life that illuminated everyone around her.” Her passing is a profound loss for the samba community and beyond.
A Rising Star Rooted in Tradition
Born in 1976 in the Pedreira Prado Lopes community, a historically significant neighborhood known as the birthplace of samba in Belo Horizonte, Adriana Araújo quickly became a prominent voice in Minas Gerais’ vibrant samba scene.
Before launching her solo career in 2020, Araújo was a member of the group Simplicidade Samba alongside her husband, Evaldo Araújo. The duo gained recognition performing at the popular Bar do Cacá, a long-standing samba hub in the São Paulo neighborhood.
During the pandemic, Araújo demonstrated her commitment to the community by hosting live performances from her rooftop, transforming them into fundraising events for local families in need. She collected donations and provided essential care packages to residents of several neighborhoods, including Primeiro de Maio and São Marcos.
Araújo released her debut album, “Minha Verdade” (“My Truth”), in 2021, showcasing her songwriting talent and exploring themes of ancestry, love, Black identity, and the lessons learned throughout her life.
Throughout her career, she graced stages at major events including the Virada Cultural de BH, the Festival Sensacional, and the Carnaval de Rua in Belo Horizonte. In 2024, she embarked on the “A Voz Ecoando” (“The Echoing Voice”) tour, bringing her music to cities across Minas Gerais.
Adriana Araújo shared the stage with some of samba’s biggest names, including Leci Brandão, Fabiana Cozza, Arlindinho, and Jorge Aragão. She also collaborated with the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra for a special performance celebrating Black Consciousness Day.
Araújo was a powerful voice for women in samba, alongside artists like Manu Dias, Aline Calixto, and Cinara Ribeiro. She created a tribute display to the iconic singer Alcione, celebrating the legacy of women in Brazilian music.
She is survived by her husband, Evaldo Araújo, and their 13-year-old son, Daniel dos Santos Araújo.
