Canadiens Approach Trade Deadline with Eye on Top-Line Winger

Montreal is actively exploring the trade market for a forward to play alongside Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield, despite a recent resurgence from Kirby Dach, according to reports surfacing on March 1, 2026. The Canadiens are navigating a busy stretch of games, with 15 contests scheduled over 31 days in March, as 98.5 Montréal reports.

General Manager Kent Hughes is prioritizing finding the right fit for the team’s top line, even as Dach has shown improvement. This pursuit signals Hughes is considering options to potentially replace Dach in that role. The team is currently on a California road trip, a timely opportunity for scouting and potential discussions, Le Devoir noted.

The search for a top-line winger comes after captain Nick Suzuki discussed the trade deadline with Hughes a year ago, urging him not to dismantle the team. Hughes listened, and the Canadiens responded with strong performances. This year, yet, the situation appears different, with the team potentially looking to add rather than subtract. Suzuki indicated he isn’t anticipating a flurry of activity, citing the team’s limited cap space and existing talent pool, as reported by The New York Times.

“Whatever happens, happens,” Suzuki said after a 6-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday. “I suppose we were able to grab Phil (Danault) probably earlier than teams do for trade deadline, and he’s helped us out. Our cap situation’s a bit tight, so there’s not a lot of room, and we already have a lot of NHL talent.”

While Hughes explores options, there’s also discussion about potentially moving Dach back to center to bolster the team’s overall offensive depth. This shift could alleviate pressure on Dach and allow him to thrive against less challenging defensive matchups. However, accepting a different role requires maturity from the young player as he strives to prove his value in the league, HabsFanatics.com reports.

The Canadiens are also reportedly working to move Patrik Laine, with his agent granted permission to speak with other teams, according to The Athletic. The team’s pursuit of a winger is complicated by the high cost of acquiring established players at this point in the season.
