Air India discovered a forgotten aircraft parked at Kolkata Airport, a Boeing 737 that had been left untouched for 13 years. The oversight, while initially appearing humorous, resulted in the airline incurring significant parking fees.

The Boeing 737, originally built in 1982, had primarily been used for cargo operations. It was initially purchased by Indian Airlines and later leased to Alliance Air before becoming part of Air India’s fleet in 2011 following the acquisition of Indian Airlines. The incident highlights the complexities of managing a large airline’s assets.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson acknowledged the oversight in an internal memo, attributing it to the airline’s 2022 acquisition by Tata Motors. However, the aircraft had already been stationed at the airport for at least nine years prior to the acquisition. This discovery underscores the challenges of integrating assets during a major corporate transition.

The prolonged period of inactivity resulted in a parking bill equivalent to 36.5 million Hungarian Forint for Air India. While a substantial sum, the airline considers the cost relatively minor in the context of its overall operations. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing expenses associated with maintaining unused aircraft.

The aircraft has since been dismantled and removed from the airport. Rather than being scrapped, it will be used as a training aid for young aviation technicians, providing valuable hands-on experience.
