Air New Zealand to Launch Economy Class Bunk Beds on Ultra-Long-Haul Flights in November 2026 Air New Zealand is set to introduce a new in-flight rest option for economy and premium economy passengers on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft, launching the Skynest bunk bed service in November 2026. The airline announced that six individual sleep pods will be installed between the economy and premium economy cabins on select long-haul routes, including flights between New York and Auckland. Each bunk measures 6.6 feet in length and will be equipped with fresh bedding, a pillow, blanket, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, a small storage shelf, and a semi-sheer privacy curtain. Passengers will also receive a complimentary kit containing an eye mask, earplugs, socks, and skincare products from the New Zealand brand Aotea. Access to the Skynest will be offered as a paid add-on, with each four-hour sleep session priced at approximately $495 USD. Travelers in economy or premium economy can book one or two sessions per flight, with availability starting from May 18, 2026, for reservations ahead of the November launch. The bunk beds are designed for use during cruise altitude only and are not certified for taxi, takeoff, or landing. Air New Zealand emphasized that passengers must be able-bodied to access the bunks independently. The concept, first unveiled in 2020, underwent years of development and testing at the airline’s innovation center in Auckland before being delayed by the global pandemic. Air New Zealand described the Skynest as a practical innovation aimed at improving comfort on ultra-long-haul journeys, particularly for travelers to and from geographically isolated destinations like New Zealand. The airline noted that tourism contributes NZ$46 billion annually to the national economy and that enhancing the long-flight experience could support continued growth in visitor numbers. The installation replaces the space of six standard economy seats and represents a world-first implementation of bunk beds in a commercial aircraft’s main cabin. As the November 2026 rollout approaches, the airline positions Skynest as a reflection of New Zealand’s reputation for thoughtful, user-focused design in aviation and travel services.
