Sharjah’s Al Majaz Amphitheatre recently hosted a critically acclaimed, three-day run of “Zir Salem,” a stage adaptation of the famed Arab epic.The production, which drew an audience of 4,800, has been lauded by its stars as a testament to the enduring power of Arab theatre and a showcase for both traditional storytelling and contemporary artistic vision. Performers highlighted the support of Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, whose presence at the premiere underscored the emirate’s commitment to the arts and cultural preservation.
Stars of the epic stage production “Zir Salem” say the impressive audience turnout during its recent run at the Sharjah Al Majaz Amphitheatre reflects a deep appreciation for authentic Arab theatre and its enduring place in the hearts of audiences. The historical saga, they noted, is ripe for reimagining with fresh artistic perspectives.
“Zir Salem” drew 4,800 attendees over three days, revisiting the famed tale with a cast of prominent Emirati and Arab artists.
The production team extended gratitude to Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, for his continued support of the theatre and arts sector, and his dedication to fostering creativity and artists. “Standing on the stage at Al Majaz in Sharjah is a rich theatrical and exceptional cultural experience, especially with the presence of Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, a supporter of theatre as a cultural and humanitarian message,” said Saloom Haddad, director and star of the play.
Haddad highlighted Sharjah’s comprehensive cultural project and the Al Majaz Amphitheatre, which hosted one of the greatest Arab epics with a contemporary artistic vision that respects the depth and authenticity of the text. He believes this approach offers genuine horizons for creativity within the Arab theatre world.
Actor Abed Fahd emphasized that the Ruler of Sharjah’s attendance at the play’s premiere had a profound impact on the performers, injecting a joyful energy into the performance, particularly in Sharjah, a city renowned as a hub for art, thought, and culture.
Bassel Yaakoub, another actor, stated that Sharjah embodies authenticity and cultivates a space for innovation, bringing together artists in a profound and deeply rooted experience stemming from a historical story that resonates strongly with Arab audiences: “Zir Salem.” He noted the engaged and discerning audience, appreciative of both authentic art and popular lore, and the production’s contemporary interpretation.
Ibrahim Salem expressed his happiness at participating in the epic, adding that his experience with the production at the Al Majaz Amphitheatre is a valuable addition to his career.
Actress Amal Mohammed, who played the role of Al-Zahra, expressed her pride and joy at performing on the stage of Al Majaz in front of the Ruler of Sharjah, whose presence provided exceptional support to her and the entire team, especially in this epic work that reflects the authenticity of Arab theatre.
The theatrical performance lasted 120 minutes, supported by advanced visual elements, including a dynamic set that mirrored the story’s transformations, accompanied by a dramatic rhythm of Arabic music, as well as lighting and sound effects that enhanced the dramatic atmosphere and supported the narrative.
Al-Muhallal and the Revenge of Kalib
“Zir Salem” brought the events of the War of Basus back to life, tracing the journey of Zir Salem (Abolayl Al-Muhallal) in his quest to avenge his brother Kalib, offering a theatrical reading that maintains the epic and poetic character of the work, while focusing on the internal conflict between the concepts of revenge and justice in their human dimensions.
