A train derailment in Spain’s Córdoba province is prompting a desperate search for survivors and leaving communities in mourning. The Alvia train, en route to Madrid, crashed Monday near the town of Adamuz, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. The incident has tragically impacted the zamorano Álvarez family of Punta Umbría, Huelva, who were traveling to a Real Madrid soccer match; a six-year-old girl was found alive at the scene, but authorities have since confirmed the deaths of four of her family members, with two others still missing [[1]].

A six-year-old girl was found wandering among the wreckage following a train derailment in Spain, offering a brief moment of hope amid growing fears for other passengers. The child is one of five members of the Zamorano Álvarez family who were traveling on the Alvia train when it crashed. The discovery initially buoyed the family, who had gathered at a train station in Huelva awaiting news of their loved ones, but their hopes were dashed later Monday with the confirmation that four other family members had died in the accident.

The derailment is prompting widespread grief in the Huelva province, as families anxiously await information about missing relatives. A spokesperson for the Zamorano Álvarez family expressed disbelief at the unfolding tragedy earlier Monday while speaking to reporters outside the Reina Sofía Hospital in Córdoba, lamenting the lack of updates on their family’s whereabouts.

Brief Hope Dashed

The young girl was immediately transported to the Reina Sofía Hospital in Córdoba, where other family members rushed to learn more about her condition. A morning report that the girl’s 12-year-old brother was also a patient at the same hospital proved incorrect.

The Zamorano Álvarez family, residents of Aljaraque, are well-known in the nearby coastal town of Punta Umbría, where they own a baby clothing store. Punta Umbría’s mayor, José Carlos Hernández, emphasized the family’s strong ties to both communities, as well as their connection to the sea. “They were very loved,” he said.

The family of five had been traveling to the capital city to attend a Real Madrid soccer match. A photo of the children celebrating the team’s victory against Levante circulated on social media before the tragedy unfolded near Adamuz. Punta Umbría has declared three days of mourning in response to the loss.

“The municipality is experiencing these moments with profound consternation and pain,” a municipal statement read. “However, the town hall maintains hope that the two residents of Punta Umbría who are still missing can be found alive.” The case highlights the agonizing wait for families as the hours pass and the chances of finding additional survivors diminish. Two people from Punta Umbría remain unaccounted for, and expectations of finding them alive are fading.
