Players of Animal Crossing: New Horizons can now significantly expand their shopping and customization options with a major update to Harv’s Island. The January 19th release allows players to construct a permanent shopping district, bringing familiar faces and services to a centralized location. Though, this expansion comes with a cost – substantial Bells are required to fund the construction, making careful planning essential for island residents.

A major update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in version 2.0, has introduced a significant expansion to Harv’s Island. The update allows players to establish a permanent shopping district on the island, extending the game’s customization options beyond their home island. Players looking to unlock this feature should prepare a substantial amount of Bells.

How to Open Harv’s Island Shopping Plaza

To begin construction, players must travel to the airport and select a flight to Harv’s Island. Upon arrival, the airport attendant, Wilbur, will mention that Harv is not currently home. Players can then follow the new path to the right of his house and meet Harv and his partner, Reese. Harv will explain his plan to develop a shopping plaza and his need for funding. It’s recommended players travel with at least 100,000 Bells to minimize trips back to their home island.

Each plot in the plaza requires a 100,000 Bell investment to open. Several statues representing potential shopkeepers are scattered throughout the area. While players can unlock all the shops, only one plot can be funded each day: once 100,000 Bells are donated to a statue, no further donations can be made to other plots that day. The selected shop will open the day after the donation is completed.

Shopkeeper Roster and Functionality

By speaking with the statues, players can learn the identity of the shopkeeper for each plot. Many of these characters will be familiar to long-time fans of the series. Here’s an overview of each shop’s function:

1. Katrina: Offers daily fortune readings.

2. Leif: Sells a variety of rugs and wallpaper. The shopping plaza provides a permanent location for characters who previously visited the player’s island randomly.

3. Tom Nook: The former resident representative will assist players with storage access. This function is particularly useful when unlocking the next plot.

4. Kicks and T.I.Y.: This couple offers furniture customization services, allowing players to modify items that cannot be altered at a workbench. This service is charged in Bells, rather than DIY materials.

5. Label: Sells plant seeds, including new crops added in the 2.0 update, and essential materials for the cooking system.

6. Redd: Provides access to art and select furniture items.

7. Saharah: Offers a selection of shoes, socks, and bags.

Recommended Unlocking Order

Unless players have an urgent need for new clothing or artwork, Label is the recommended first choice. As plant seeds and crops are central to the 2.0 update’s farming and cooking systems, unlocking Label early allows players to fully experience the new features more quickly.

Unlock New Hairstyles

Harv’s Island also introduces new content related to Reese. Once the shopping plaza is operational, Reese will offer players a random new hairstyle. This service is available once per day, and the unlocked hairstyle will be permanently added to the player’s customization options at their mirror.
