A high-speed train collision in Spain’s andalusia region Friday evening has left at least 30 people seriously injured, prompting a major emergency response. The incident, near the town of Adamos, involved a train traveling between Málaga and Madrid derailing and colliding with another train on an adjacent track. Authorities have suspended rail traffic along the key Madrid-Andalusia corridor as investigations begin into the cause of the crash.
At least 30 people are in serious condition following a high-speed train collision in Spain on Friday, according to officials. The incident, which occurred near the town of Adamos, has prompted a large-scale emergency response and raised concerns about rail safety in the country.
Emergency services reported that other passengers sustained injuries and that some remain trapped inside the carriages.
Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente announced that all injured passengers have been transported to hospitals. “All those who needed medical attention have been evacuated to hospital,” Puente said in a statement to reporters, adding that “30 people with serious injuries have been taken to hospitals.”
The collision involved a train operated by Iryo, traveling from Málaga (southern Spain) to Madrid, which derailed near Adamos and veered onto an adjacent track. There, it collided with another train, also causing it to derail, according to the Spanish rail network administrator, Adif.
A witness speaking to Spanish public broadcaster TVE reported that one carriage of the initially derailed train completely overturned.
Juan Manuel Moreno, the president of the Andalusia region, stated on X (formerly Twitter): “We have sent emergency teams and logistical support to the scene of the accident to provide the necessary assistance.”
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was “following with great concern the incident between the two high-speed trains that have derailed in Adamos.” He added, “The government is working with the relevant authorities and emergency teams to assist passengers.”
The Spanish Royal Family expressed “deep concern” in a statement following the “serious accident” and offered “heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.”
Traffic on the important route connecting Madrid and the Andalusia region has been suspended until further notice. The disruption highlights the importance of this rail corridor for both passenger and freight transport.
