With just a month to go before the start of the Apertura Tournament, the Argentine soccer market is already heating up, led by River Plate who have announced two significant signings as they prepare for a season that will also include the Copa Sudamericana.
El Millonario has secured midfielder Fausto Vera (25) on a one-year loan from Atlético Mineiro of Brazil. They’ve also spent approximately $7 million to acquire Aníbal Moreno from Palmeiras of Brazil, signing him to a contract that runs through 2029.
However, the biggest moves so far have come in the managerial ranks. Sergio Gómez and Favio Orsi have been confirmed as the new coaches for Newell’s, replacing Cristian Fabbiani, who was dismissed at the end of the previous tournament and temporarily succeeded by Lucas Bernardi. Meanwhile, Rosario Central has appointed Jorge Almirón following the surprising departure of Ariel Holan, Lucas Pusineri has taken the helm at Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero, replacing Omar De Felippe, Diego Martínez has returned to Huracán in place of Frank Darío Kudelka, and Hugo Colace has been confirmed as the permanent head coach of Atlético Tucumán.
Another significant move saw Ignacio Fernández join Gimnasia La Plata. “Nacho,” 35, leaves River Plate to rejoin Lobo a decade after his initial departure. This return provides a boost of experience and leadership to the Gimnasia squad.
While numerous signings have been agreed upon across the 30 teams in the Liga Profesional, many are still awaiting formal announcements and the traditional contract signing photos. Instituto de Córdoba, Gimnasia de Mendoza, Deportivo Riestra, Atlético Tucumán, and Barracas Central have all confirmed additions, with Barracas Central notably signing Puerto Rico national team player Wilfredo Rivera in preparation for their Copa Sudamericana campaign.
The transfer window officially opens during the second week of January, with teams having until the first week of March to finalize their rosters, even after the Apertura Tournament has begun.
