United Airlines Planes Graze Each Other at LaGuardia Airport Amid Air Traffic Control Staffing Issues
Two United Airlines planes made contact on the ground at LaGuardia Airport yesterday evening, November 01, 2025, at 14:54:00, as ongoing staffing shortages continue to impact air travel nationwide.
According to the airline, United flight 580, arriving from Chicago, grazed the tail of United flight 434, which was parked on a taxiway while preparing to depart for Houston. Both aircraft are Boeing 737-800 models. A total of 328 passengers and 21 crew members were aboard both flights, and thankfully, no injuries were reported. Passengers from both planes deplaned normally and are being accommodated.
The incident occurred as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that nearly 80% of air traffic controllers were absent at New York–area facilities yesterday, a situation linked to the ongoing government shutdown. This led to deliberate slowdowns in air traffic for safety reasons. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby earlier in the day called for bipartisan action to resolve the funding impasse, stating, “pass a clean CR” – a congressional funding mechanism – to reopen the government.
This incident highlights the growing strain on the aviation system as staffing challenges and political gridlock contribute to increased delays and potential safety concerns for travelers; you can find more information about air travel delays at the Department of Transportation website. United Airlines stated it is working to re-accommodate passengers on the affected flights as quickly as possible.
Officials are continuing to assess the damage to the aircraft and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
