Designer Erdem Moralioglu Joins British Museum Board of Trustees
Fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu has been appointed to the board of trustees at the British Museum, the institution announced today.
Moralioglu, known for staging numerous runway shows under the museum’s colonnade and drawing inspiration from its collections, expressed his enthusiasm for the role. “I can’t think of another institution — not only in the U.K., but in the world — that exemplifies and represents time and culture and history in the way they do,” he said in a statement. “The British Museum is an open book to the world. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.” He described the appointment as a “full-circle moment,” referencing past shows inspired by the Bloomsbury group and emphasizing his belief in the power of art and culture.
The board already includes prominent figures such as artist Tracey Emin, classics professor Mary Beard, and designer Jony Ive. Moralioglu’s appointment comes ahead of the inaugural British Museum Ball on Saturday, themed around the color pink and coinciding with the exhibition Ancient India: Living Traditions. The event aims to support international partnerships in countries including Iraq, Nigeria, and India, building on the museum’s recent collaborative efforts with institutions like the Kumasi Palace in Ghana and the History Museum of Armenia – a strategy that has seen increased cultural exchange in recent years, as detailed by The Art Newspaper.
Looking ahead, the British Museum is preparing for a significant cultural exchange next year, with the Bayeux Tapestry scheduled for display in London while treasures from Sutton Hoo will be exhibited in Normandy, France. Museum officials stated Moralioglu’s insights will be invaluable as the museum continues to navigate its role in a changing cultural landscape.
