Stolen iPhone Recovered from Swiss Asylum Center Following Legal Standoff

A 21-year-old woman has recovered her stolen iPhone 15 after it was tracked to a federal asylum center in Kappelen, Switzerland—a recovery that occurred only after authorities initially claimed they lacked the legal authority to search the premises.

The incident began on the night of May 3, 2026, when Romina’s phone was stolen during a night out in Bern. Using tracking software, she was able to pinpoint the device’s location inside a federal asylum center in the Kappelen area. Despite reporting the theft and providing the exact location, Romina found herself caught in a bureaucratic impasse.

The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) initially informed her that there was no legal basis to conduct a search of the center. Similarly, the Bern Cantonal Police cited concerns over proportionality and the logistical difficulty of searching a large building as reasons for their inability to intervene.

The situation shifted following media reports regarding the case. Four days after the story was publicized, police notified Romina that her device had been located and was available for pickup at the police station. The Bern Cantonal Police later clarified that security personnel at the asylum center had secured the stolen property “in the course of their duties.”

While Romina expressed her relief, stating, “I am mega happy I got it back,” the device was not returned in its original condition. Romina noted that the iPhone had acquired several new scratches and the SIM card holder had been replaced with one of a different color. Her original SIM card and the phone’s protective case remain missing.

The case highlights the growing tension between the precision of modern digital tracking and the legal boundaries that limit police intervention within government-managed facilities. Authorities emphasized that house searches remain possible only under strict and clear legal requirements.
