Nunes Marques Assumes TSE Presidency, Hails Electronic Voting Machines as ‘Heritage of Democracy’
Minister Nunes Marques officially took the helm of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, using his inauguration speech to deliver a strong endorsement of Brazil’s electronic voting system. During the ceremony, Marques described the electronic voting machines as “institutional heritage” and a “heritage of democracy,” signaling a firm commitment to the existing electoral infrastructure.

The move underscores the importance of institutional stability as the court prepares for future election cycles. This public defense of the voting system comes as the TSE seeks to maintain public trust in the integrity of the democratic process.
Despite the formal nature of the event, visible political friction clouded the atmosphere. President Lula and Senator Alcolumbre were observed standing side by side without exchanging words or greetings. Further tension was noted when Alcolumbre avoided applauding Messias during the proceedings.
While political dynamics remained strained, the new administration received significant institutional backing. Both the Attorney General’s Office (PGE) and the president of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) expressed their confidence in the new TSE management and its ability to conduct upcoming elections.
