Following confirmation of his planned departure from AZ Alkmaar at season’s end, Director of Football Affairs Max Huiberts has publicly addressed speculation linking him to a role with rival club Ajax. The move comes amid ongoing restructuring within Ajax’s leadership following a challenging Eredivisie season, where they finished fifth and failed to qualify for the Champions League. Huiberts, in comments reported by Voetbal International, clarified the nature of contact with Ajax officials and addressed perceived tensions between the clubs, while also outlining his commitment to AZ during his remaining tenure.
Max Huiberts, Director of Football Affairs at AZ, has confirmed he was approached for a role at Ajax, as reported by Voetbal International. Huiberts previously announced his departure from AZ at the end of the current season.
“People within Ajax did reach out to me, that’s true. But that’s where it ended. Any club that calls will receive the same answer,” Huiberts stated. He dismissed any notion of animosity towards Ajax, despite a perception of a strong rivalry. “There’s a bit of a narrative around that, but I don’t recognize it. I think it stems from times we’ve competed against them, aiming to prove we could win – and we haven’t lost to them in the last nine matches.”
Huiberts clarified that any disagreements were primarily with Ajax leadership. “Robert Eenhoorn and I had a few disagreements, for example, regarding the transfer of Alex Kroes. But it wasn’t based on dislike.” He emphasized that AZ frequently engaged in discussions with Ajax and the KNVB, often concerning the advantages afforded to the league’s traditional powerhouses. “That mindset isn’t conducive to strengthening Dutch football as a whole.”
AZ is currently considering splitting Huiberts’ responsibilities due to the heavy workload. He acknowledges this is a logical step. “We’ve discussed that before. The role encompasses a tremendous amount of work.” Huiberts is committed to finishing his tenure in Alkmaar strongly. “I plan to dedicate the next six months to my work with full commitment. After that, I’m looking forward to some time at home, watching the World Cup, cooking, fishing, playing golf, and supporting AZ from the stands next season.”
