Republican lawmakers are calling for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to investigate and potentially penalize Terrible Bunny and executives from NBC and the NFL following his Super Bowl 2026 halftime performance. The controversy stems from allegations of explicit lyrics and “indescribable depravities” included in the show.
Congressman Randy Fine demanded sanctions, stating the performance was “illegal” due to lyrics he claims would have resulted in the broadcast being pulled and substantial fines had they been delivered in English, alongside “all the other disgusting and pornographic filth” of the show.
“We are sending a letter to Brendan Carr asking for dramatic action, including fines and broadcast license reviews, against the NFL, NBC and Bad Bunny. Lock them up,” the Florida representative posted on social media.
Lawmaker Alleges Show Featured Sexual Acts and Inappropriate Language
The congressman included English translations of Bad Bunny songs containing words like ‘dick,’ ‘ass,’ and ‘fuck,’ arguing they are unsuitable for broadcast television, despite artists often avoiding such language during live performances to adhere to regulations.
Congressman Andy Ogles of Tennessee joined the call for action, sending a letter to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce requesting a formal investigation into the NFL and NBC for “facilitating this indecent transmission.” Ogles claimed the music “glorifies sodomy and other unspeakable depravities.”
“Children were forced to endure explicit displays of gay acts, women twerking suggestively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch even as rubbing against the air,” Ogles wrote on X.
Representative Mark Alford of Missouri stated that Republicans are “already investigating” Bad Bunny’s performance based on the translated lyrics.
In an interview with the conservative news channel Real America’s Voice, the representative suggested the situation “could be worse” than the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl 2004.
“I don’t speak fluent Spanish, I know how to ask where the bathroom is, but if these lyrics are true to what was said on national television, we have a lot of questions for the entities that broadcast this, and we will be talking to Brendan Carr at the FCC about it,” he said.
Growing Republican Criticism
These calls reflect increasing disapproval from Republicans regarding Bad Bunny’s halftime show, which former President Donald Trump labeled “one of the worst in history” and an “affront to greatness” of the United States.
Carr, the FCC chairman, has previously signaled a willingness to align with the Administration, as demonstrated in September 2025 when he threatened action against ABC, including reviewing its licenses, if the network didn’t discipline comedian Jimmy Kimmel for his comments about the shooting of conservative Charlie Kirk.
