London played host to the 79th BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, February 22, 2026, with Alan Cumming, known for hosting and producing The Traitors U.S., at the helm of the ceremony held at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

The BAFTA nominations revealed a competitive field, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s political thriller One Battle After Another leading the pack with 14 nods. Ryan Coogler’s vampire film Sinners followed closely with 13, while Chloé Zhao’s Shakespearean drama Hamnet and Josh Safdie’s ping-pong caper Marty Supreme each garnered 11 nominations.

Other top contenders included Joachim Trier’s drama Sentimental Value and Guillermo del Toro’s gothic epic Frankenstein, both earning eight BAFTA nominations. Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy Bugonia and Kirk Jones’ dramedy I Swear, a film centered on a Tourette Syndrome advocate, too received five nominations apiece.

A number of performers received their first BAFTA nominations, including Robert Aramayo, Odessa A’zion, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Michael B. Jordan, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Stellan Skarsgård, and Teyana Taylor.

The awards ceremony saw Wunmi Mosaku take home the award for best supporting actress for her work in Sinners, while Sean Penn was recognized as best supporting actor for One Battle After Another.

The night also marked milestones in BAFTA history: Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet became the most-nominated film by a female director, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners earned the most nominations ever for a film by a Black director. The accolades reflect a growing push for diversity and inclusion within the film industry.

At the BAFTA Film Awards 2025, Conclave and The Brutalist were the substantial winners, each taking home four honors.

BAFTA chair Sara Putt opened the evening, praising the nominees and thanking them for providing audiences with “windows into other worlds and sometimes, yes, a respite from this one.” She also highlighted the excellence of the nominated works, emphasizing that they were chosen “no algorithms involved.”

The ceremony kicked off with a pre-recorded sketch featuring Alan Cumming discussing marketing ideas for the BAFTAs with Brian Cox, Warwick Davis, Ken Jeong, Jacobi Jupe, Hannah Waddingham, dog LaLa, a muted and video-less Leonardo DiCaprio, and Paddington Bear.

In his opening monologue, Cumming reflected on the themes explored in this year’s nominated films. “Whatever happened to escapism? I’m exhausted,” he quipped, before inviting the audience to participate in a collective primal scream in response to world events.

Director David Borenstein accepted the award for best documentary for Mr. Nobody Against Putin, referencing current events by saying, “No matter how dark things get, whether in Russia or on the streets of Minneapolis, we always face a moral choice.”

Political commentary continued with Akinola Davies Jr., director of My Father’s Shadow, who concluded his acceptance speech for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer with the words, “Free Palestine!”

Also during the ceremony, Clare Binns, creative director of Picturehouse Cinemas and Picturehouse Entertainment, was honored with the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award. She emphasized the importance of neighborhood cinemas and lauded Robert Redstone for founding the Sundance Institute and Sundance Film Festival, stating, “He knew that above all, we should be prepared to take risks.”
