Ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is reportedly living a life of luxury in Russia, while still grappling with the shock of his government’s recent overthrow.
The fall of the Baath regime in Syria on December 8, 2024, forced Bashar al-Assad to seek refuge in Russia, where he has resumed medical studies while his family enjoys a secluded and affluent lifestyle. The situation highlights the ongoing instability in the region and the fate of leaders displaced by conflict.
Following his removal from power, Assad’s life in Russia has drawn considerable attention. According to reports, the former president is currently enrolled in ophthalmology courses.
The Guardian reports that a source with ties to the Assad family said, “He is learning Russian and refreshing his knowledge of ophthalmology.” The source added, “This is his passion, it’s clear he doesn’t need the money. He regularly practiced ophthalmology in Damascus even before the war in Syria began.”
The source suggested that affluent residents of Moscow could become his target clientele.
LIFE IN AN AFFLUENT DISTRICT
One year after the Syrian regime’s collapse, the Assad family is living a quiet, isolated, and luxurious life in both Moscow and the United Arab Emirates. Two sources close to the family indicated they are residing in Rublyovka, a prestigious district of Moscow favored by the Russian elite, similar to where former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled Kyiv in 2014, is believed to be living.

‘INSIGNIFICANT TO PUTIN’
A family friend described their current existence as “very calm. They have very little, if any, contact with the outside world. They are only in contact with people who served in the palace at the time, such as Mansur Azzam, the Minister of Presidential Affairs, and economic advisor Yasar Ibrahim.”
According to a source close to the Kremlin, Assad is largely “insignificant” to President Putin and Russia’s political elite.
“Putin is not very patient with leaders who have lost power, and Assad is no longer seen as an influential figure, not even as an interesting guest for dinner,” the Kremlin source said.
Mahir al-Assad, Bashar’s brother, was reportedly desperately trying to reach him in the days following the regime’s fall. “Mahir was trying to reach Bashar for days, but he wouldn’t answer the phone. He stayed in the palace until the last second, and Syrians saw his hookah coals were still hot. It was Mahir who helped others escape, not Bashar, who was only thinking of himself,” a friend of Mahir al-Assad stated.

THE ASSAD FAMILY FORCED TO SLEEP IN THEIR CAR
Elie Hatem, the lawyer for Bashar al-Assad’s uncle, Rifat al-Assad, recounted how his clients panicked after the fall of the regime, unsure how to escape Syria. “When they arrived at Hmeymim Air Base, they told the Russian soldiers they were the Assad family, but the soldiers didn’t understand English or Arabic. So, eight of them had to sleep in their car in front of the base,” he said.
Hatem added that the family was only able to reach Oman with the intervention of a high-ranking Russian official.
ASMA AL-ASSAD IMPROVES WITH EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT
A source familiar with the situation said that Asma al-Assad, Bashar’s wife, underwent experimental treatment under the supervision of Russian security services and has since recovered. The source indicated that with Asma al-Assad’s health stabilized, Bashar al-Assad is eager to share his story, having arranged interviews with American podcast hosts, but is awaiting approval from Russian authorities before appearing in the media.

‘STILL IN SHOCK’
An unnamed family friend, who recently met with Assad and his children, said, “They seem a little dazed. I think they are still a bit in shock. They are trying to get used to a life where they are no longer the first family.”
The friend noted that the family was only seen in public at the graduation ceremony of their daughter, Zein al-Assad, on June 30th, after the regime’s fall. Zein’s classmates confirmed the family’s attendance, adding that they did not stay long and did not pose for photos with Zein on stage.
VISITS TO THE UAE
According to sources close to the family, the children and their mother spend much of their time shopping, frequently purchasing luxury goods. Leaked Russian data shows Zein al-Assad is a member of an exclusive Moscow gym. The Assad children also frequently visit the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by Asma on at least one occasion.
Initially, the Assad family reportedly hoped to relocate from Moscow to the UAE, as it was considered a more familiar location. Family friends stated that the children did not speak Russian and struggled to integrate into Russian society.
