New York Islanders Players Embrace Beards After End of Long-Standing Policy
East Meadow, N.Y. – New York Islanders players and staff are sporting facial hair after a seven-year policy requiring clean-shaven faces was lifted following the departure of former executive Lou Lamoriello.
Images from the team’s charity golf outing last month quickly circulated online, showcasing the new looks of several veteran players. Lamoriello, similar to the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, had enforced a strict grooming standard. Forward Kyle Palmieri explained, “It’s one less thing to worry about when you come to the rink. I think it was part of our team standard to be clean-shaven, and I had no issues with it other than having to go through a lot of razors.”
Players were quick to express respect for Lamoriello and his rules, despite the change. Defenseman Ryan Pulock stated, “We all respected Lou’s rules in here, and rules are rules. Guys look presentable at all times when we were clean-shaven.” The shift in policy comes as the Islanders begin a new era under General Manager Mathieu Darche, who has brought in several new faces, including top draft pick Matthew Schaefer – the youngest player in league history to record a point in his debut. While some players, like Palmieri, initially felt strange not shaving, many have embraced the freedom. “Over the course of the summer, you just get lazy and forget to shave, forget to shave and then all of a sudden you have a beard,” Palmieri said. The change in appearance reflects a broader cultural shift within the organization, potentially signaling a more relaxed atmosphere as the team looks to improve on last season’s performance. Team officials have indicated that the decision to allow facial hair is a matter of player preference and will not be subject to further regulation.
