Blu-ray Recorder Production Ends at Sony

Sony has announced it will completely discontinue sales of Blu-ray recorders worldwide. The company expects to conclude production by the end of February, after which remaining inventory will be sold off. No new models will be released.

The move effectively closes a chapter that began in 2003 with the launch of the world’s first Blu-ray recorder, devices that allowed consumers to record television broadcasts and other content onto Blu-ray discs in high definition. These recorders were initially popular, offering high-definition recording capabilities.

Shifting Technology Landscape

In recent years, mass data storage has increasingly shifted to cloud-based services, while video content consumption has moved towards streaming platforms. This trend has significantly impacted demand for Blu-ray recorders, leading to a continuous decline in shipments. The devices have lost relevance, particularly as the availability of recordable Blu-ray discs has also diminished.

Sony showcased its latest Blu-ray recorder model in early 2024. Following the decision to halt production, no new products in this category have been announced.

Restructuring of Sony’s Optical Disc Division

The phasing out of this product line has been gradual. As early as June 2024, Sony reduced its workforce in its optical disc division – responsible for Blu-ray technology research and development – by 40%. In January 2025, the company announced it would cease production of recordable BD-R and BD-RE discs after 18 years. Now, in February 2025, Blu-ray disc production is being fully discontinued.

Models such as the BDZ-ZW1900 (2024) and the BDZ-FBT4200, BDZ-FBT2200, and BDZ-FBW2200, released the previous year, will gradually disappear from the market. This decision reflects the broader industry shift away from physical media.

Blu-ray Players Remain Available

This change does not affect Blu-ray players designed for playback. For example, the UBP-X700/K model released last year remains on sale. It is a simplified version of the previous UBP-X700 (2018) model, lacking Wi-Fi, Spotify Connect, and screen mirroring, but retains an Ethernet connection for software updates. The 2019 UBP-X800M2 model, with expanded network capabilities, is also still available for purchase.

Shrinking Blu-ray Market Sees Fewer Retailers

The Blu-ray market has been in decline for some time. Manufacturers such as Oppo and Samsung have already discontinued their players. LG followed suit in 2024, while Reavon ceased operations last year, and Pioneer announced its exit from optical disc drive production. Among major brands still offering Blu-ray players, only Sony and Panasonic remain. Alternatives are available in the form of high-end models like the Magnetar UDP900MKII or UDP800MKI, as well as premium solutions from the Chinese brand Pannde.
