Former Germany international Jérôme Boateng is beginning a ten-day coaching internship with FC Barcelona, after a similar arrangement with Bayern Munich was cancelled following fan protests [[3]]. The 37-year-old, who retired in September, will work closely with manager Hansi Flick-the pair previously leading Bayern to a historic treble in 2020-as Boateng pursues his coaching badges [[1]]. The move comes amid scrutiny surrounding a 2024 assault conviction, for which Boateng received a suspended sentence.
A New Chapter Begins.
FC Barcelona posted a video to their Instagram account late Thursday showing Jérôme Boateng, 37, on the Catalan club’s training grounds.
The former center-back, who announced his retirement in September, was greeted by Barça forward Robert Lewandowski, 37, with whom he played together at FC Bayern from 2014 to 2021. Standing alongside them was Barça manager Hansi Flick, 60, who coached both players at Bayern Munich from 2019 to 2021, leading the team to a historic sextuple of titles in the 2019/20 season.
Hamann’s Latest Criticism: “Sané Didn’t Show Us Anything We Didn’t Already Know”
Intriguing Visit: The video released by Barcelona offered no details regarding the purpose of Boateng’s visit!
However, sources at BILD have learned that the 2014 World Cup winner will spend ten days with the club as an observer. During his time in Barcelona, Boateng will closely shadow Flick’s coaching staff, an opportunity granted by his former manager.
Boateng and Lewandowski still have a strong relationship
This move comes after a planned similar opportunity at FC Bayern fell through. While coach Vincent Kompany initially approved the visit, protests from the club’s active fan base led to its cancellation.
The situation stems from a 2024 conviction for assault against Boateng’s former partner, though he received a suspended sentence on appeal. Boateng does not have a criminal record.
Fan Opposition: The club’s ultras specifically voiced their opposition to Boateng’s return in any capacity.
Now, Boateng has been given a chance at Barcelona. The former professional is looking to gain experience for his planned career as a coach. Boateng announced to BILD in mid-October: “I have successfully completed the course and exam for the B license. I would like to complete some internships by January.”
After his opportunity with Bayern didn’t materialize, he’s now beginning his internship with FC Barcelona.
