Bologna, Italy – A fresh initiative is offering residents a rapid and personalized health assessment using a cutting-edge “Health Pod.” The project, a collaboration between the local health authority and the city of Bologna, aims to promote preventative care and empower individuals to take control of their well-being. Early health checks are crucial for identifying potential issues and maintaining overall health as populations age.

What is the Health Pod?

Dubbed ‘Salute in Sintesi’ (Health in Synthesis), the program provides a free and immediate check-up, followed by tailored recommendations for physical activity, nutrition, and lifestyle improvements. The Health Pod will operate at DumBO, located at Via Casarini 19, until December 2026, and will then become mobile, expanding its reach to other areas of the city.

At the heart of the project is the Health Pod itself – an advanced technological structure that, with the support of healthcare professionals, delivers a comprehensive and personalized evaluation of an individual’s health status in just a few minutes.

Who Can Use the Health Pod?

The initiative is open to all adults, with priority given to residents of the Porto Saragozza and Navile districts of Bologna until the end of the year, after which it will expand to other city zones. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by emailing SaluteinSintesi1@auslbo.onmicrosoft.com. More information is available on the project’s website here.

What Parameters Does the Pod Measure?

Individuals are greeted by trained healthcare staff and guided into the Health Pod. Using integrated sensors and the latest digital devices, key physiological parameters are measured quickly and non-invasively, including:

  • blood pressure
  • heart rate
  • body temperature
  • oxygen saturation
  • biological age
  • physical fitness level.

Lifestyle Questionnaires

Beyond clinical data, the Health Pod too assesses lifestyle factors through intuitive digital questionnaires that explore stress levels, perceived well-being, sleep quality, physical activity, and daily habits.

The Final Results

After a brief assessment, participants receive a personalized summary document – a clear and immediate snapshot of their overall health, designed to inform conscious decisions about improvement.

This can include:

  • tailored adapted physical activity programs
  • personalized nutritional consultations to improve eating habits
  • support to quit smoking, with specialist assistance
  • initiatives dedicated to psychophysical well-being and stress management
  • pelvic floor rehabilitation interventions
  • suggestions for strengthening healthy lifestyles in daily life.

Prevention for a Healthy Future

The Health Pod, costing €60,000 and funded by national prevention funds, aims to “promote and enhance the health of citizens,” according to Anna Maria Petrini, Director General of the Bologna Health Authority. “In just a few minutes, it offers a personal assessment and then provides advice or integrates the person into a wellness and improvement path, such as adapted physical activity or nutritional guidance, also thanks to collaboration with associations and the municipality. Promoting health means making attention to correct lifestyles a part of each of our cultures.”

“This is not a diagnosis,” clarifies Paolo Pandolfi, Director of the Public Health Department of the Bologna Health Authority. “It assesses our current health level and indicates ways to maintain or improve it. It is particularly aimed at an active population, at young people, due to the fact that we know that our community is aging, and we necessitate to create conditions for healthy and active aging.”

The Numbers on Aging

Pandolfi notes that “in 2042, more than 36 percent of the population will be over 75 years old, compared to today, and we need to ensure they reach that age in good health. This tool brings us physically closer to people who can acquire a first assessment. There are no co-pays because prevention is a major investment for the community.”
