Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons Part Ways

Orchestra leadership stated Friday that they and conductor Andris Nelsons “were not aligned on future vision.”

In a surprising move, the Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced it will not be renewing the contract of its music director, Andris Nelsons. The decision, revealed Friday, marks a significant shift for one of the nation’s leading orchestras, which has been led by the Latvian maestro for the past twelve years.

Nelsons’ tenure with the Boston Symphony will conclude in the summer of 2027, following the Tanglewood season. The timing and tone of the announcement have raised eyebrows within the classical music world, where transitions of this kind typically unfold over a longer period.

“The decision to not renew his contract was made by the BSO’s Board of Trustees because, beyond our shared desire to ensure our orchestra continues to perform at the highest levels, the BSO and Andris Nelsons were not aligned on future vision,” the orchestra’s board and CEO Chad Smith said in a statement to stakeholders. A similar letter was reportedly sent to orchestra members.

Nelsons communicated to orchestra members that the board “has decided that my musical directorship will conclude in August of 2027, with the aim of a mutually amicable final chapter.” He acknowledged that this wasn’t “the decision I anticipated or wanted,” but affirmed he remains “firmly committed to you and to our work together.”

According to The New York Times, “his departure wasn’t entirely a surprise. Nelsons has faced increasing criticism for his performances with the orchestra, amid questions about his overcommitment at a time when many musical directors juggle multiple jobs.”

The 47-year-old Nelsons also serves as the principal conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, Germany. He is currently on tour with the Vienna Philharmonic, with performances scheduled in Washington this weekend.
