Brandi Carlile Announces New Album ‘Returning to Myself,’ Reflects on Career and Collaboration with Elton John
Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile unveiled details of her upcoming eighth solo album, “Returning to Myself,” and discussed her decades-long career, including a recent collaborative album with Elton John, in a wide-ranging interview today.
The album, set for release on October 24th, is described by Carlile as a “mid-forties ‘a-ha!’ moment,” and delves into intimate life stories and reflections on her upbringing. She spoke of a childhood marked by both “twisted beauty” and “chaos” outside of Seattle, experiences she says fuel her songwriting. Carlile also detailed the process of working with John on their joint project, Who Believes in Angels?, calling it “stormy” but ultimately “life-affirming.”
Carlile recounted a particularly challenging aspect of the collaboration, navigating the contrast between her long-held admiration for John and the reality of his creative process. “He was this conduit, this fantasy outside of my life and childhood…I thought the man was an angel, and then I’m with him and I’m realising he’s so much more,” she explained. She also highlighted the impact of working with Joni Mitchell, whom she assisted in returning to the stage after a 2015 brain aneurysm, noting Mitchell’s resilience and determination. This work with Mitchell, and the subsequent Joni Jams, are detailed in the new album’s track “Joni.” The album also features a song, “Church & State,” that directly addresses concerns about the separation of church and state in the United States, a topic gaining increased attention in light of recent Supreme Court decisions. You can learn more about the ongoing debate surrounding the separation of church and state here.
The release of “Returning to Myself” comes as Carlile continues to enjoy growing international recognition, particularly in the United Kingdom, where her collaboration with Elton John has resonated with audiences. Her career began over 20 years ago, with her 2007 breakthrough album, The Story, selling half a million copies. Carlile’s advocacy work, including her support for humanitarian causes and LGBTQ+ issues, has also become a defining aspect of her public persona, as highlighted in her previous work on her official website.
Carlile is scheduled to begin a promotional tour for the album next month, with dates to be announced shortly, and expressed hope that the album will resonate with listeners as a culmination of her life’s experiences.
