Post-Game Scuffle Erupts Between Lions and Chiefs After Kansas City Victory
A physical altercation broke out between players from the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs following the Chiefs’ 30-17 win yesterday evening, escalating from a handshake snub to an on-field scuffle.
The incident began after the game when Detroit defensive back Brian Branch appeared to slap the helmet of Kansas City wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. This followed Branch’s decision to forgo a post-game handshake with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as both teams left the field. Smith-Schuster stated that Branch “threw a punch” after he attempted to offer a customary post-game greeting, adding, “I expect to shake his hand and say, ‘Good game’ and move Pat’s way.” The altercation quickly involved multiple players, including Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco and Mahomes himself, who briefly became caught in a pile of players.
Branch later explained his actions, citing frustration over an unpenalized illegal block by Smith-Schuster during the game. “I did a little childish thing, but I’m tired of people doing stuff in between a play and refs don’t catch it,” Branch said in the Lions’ locker room. “Like them trying to bully me out there.” He added, “I got blocked in the back illegally and it was in front of the ref and the ref didn’t do anything, and just stuff like that.” This incident comes after Branch was previously involved in an incident in Week 1, throwing teammate Tucker Kraft’s helmet. Mahomes, speaking after the game, emphasized the Chiefs’ focus on playing within the rules, stating, “We play the game in between the whistles.”
Lions coach Dan Campbell condemned Branch’s behavior, calling it “inexcusable” and apologizing to Chiefs coach Andy Reid and Smith-Schuster. The NFL is likely to review the incident and could issue fines or suspensions, potentially impacting the Lions’ playoff hopes. Campbell stated, “That’s not OK. That’s not what we do here, and it’s not gonna be OK.”
