New Year’s celebrations in the Dutch city of Breda descended into widespread disorder overnight,as police responded to escalating violence that included attacks with Molotov cocktails and fireworks according to local officials. the unrest, which impacted multiple neighborhoods including Tuinzigt, Geeren-Noord, and Geeren-Zuid, highlights growing concerns about public safety during large-scale events and has prompted condemnation from Breda’s mayor. This incident follows earlier reports of similar disturbances during New Year’s Eve in other Dutch cities with 250 arrests made nationwide.

New Year’s celebrations in the Dutch city of Breda devolved into widespread unrest, with police targeted by Molotov cocktails and fireworks. The violence wasn’t isolated to a single neighborhood, extending to Geeren-Noord and Geeren-Zuid, according to authorities. The incidents underscore a growing concern about public safety during holiday periods.

Multiple neighborhoods in Breda became scenes of chaos during the New Year’s transition. Residents of Tuinzigt described the situation as resembling a “war zone,” with burning cars, street fires, and officers pelted with paving stones.

Breda Mayor Paul Depla observed the escalating violence from the police station. “It has to stop. Hooligans are ruining it,” he said in a previous statement to Omroep Brabant. “These people shouldn’t be allowed to dictate what happens in a neighborhood.” Now, it’s been confirmed that Geeren-Noord and Geeren-Zuid were also targeted by extreme violence.

Footage obtained by Omroep Brabant shows rioters focusing their aggression on law enforcement. Videos circulating on Snapchat depict a group of masked individuals attacking a police vehicle with fireworks and firecrackers.

Playground Assault
From a hill in a playground behind Rombout Kledermansstraat, at least five individuals wearing face coverings launched fireworks and firecrackers at a passing police car. Explosions followed in quick succession. The vehicle continued on its route, surrounded by fire and smoke.

The scene around the car appeared engulfed in flames, with the individuals laughing and shouting loudly in the video.

Molotov Cocktail Attack
Shortly after, on Alard Duhamelstraat, the situation escalated further. A person sprinted toward the police car, which had returned to the street from the playground, and threw a Molotov cocktail in its direction.

The bottle shattered, and flames spread over the vehicle. Shouts of “Get out of here!” and “Come fight, man, come fight!” could be heard as individuals rushed toward the departing car. The flames ignited a tire on the police vehicle.

“This is terrible for the officers involved,” a police spokesperson said. “Throwing Molotov cocktails and other violent acts not only endanger people’s safety but also undermine the sense of security we are trying to build.”

The spokesperson could not confirm if the firebomb caused any damage. No officers were injured during the incident. “It’s not only reprehensible but also incomprehensible.”

Office Building Destroyed by Fire
Footage also emerged from the Geeren-Noord neighborhood. There, fireworks were attached to a window of an office building belonging to housing corporation WonenBreburg on Wensel Cobergherstraat.

Three men ran away after lighting the device, while two others remained to film. The window of the building then shattered with a loud bang.

The situation escalated further when masked individuals threw two burning Molotov cocktails through the opening created by the broken window. Within seconds, the building was ablaze. The orange glow illuminated the street, with one of the perpetrators calmly filming the fire on their phone.

Extensive Damage
“Very extensive damage has been caused by the fire,” a WonenBreburg spokesperson told Omroep Brabant. The housing corporation’s damage control team responded immediately.

“We have now closed the building and are looking at how to proceed,” the spokesperson said. “It’s especially unfortunate for the residents in the neighborhood that New Year’s Eve turned out like this.”

Police confirmed that a report of arson has been filed. The investigation into the perpetrators is ongoing. “It’s also painful to see that a number of people are ruining it for everyone else,” a police spokesperson said. “Together with all parties involved, we continue to fight this form of violence and try to ensure it doesn’t go unpunished.”
