The Milwaukee Brewers face familiar financial constraints as they prepare for the upcoming season, possibly impacting their roster construction. With an eye toward bolstering the team’s overall competitiveness, front office strategists are weighing options to create payroll flexibility, including potential trades involving key players like right-hander Freddy Peralta. While team officials downplay an immediate move for Peralta following Brandon Woodruff‘s qualifying offer acceptance, his salary remains a important factor in the Brewers’ offseason planning.

The Milwaukee Brewers are once again navigating a tight payroll situation as the season approaches, and that could mean tough decisions regarding their roster. Sources indicate the team may need to create financial flexibility through trades to add impact players, leading to speculation about the future of star right-hander Freddy Peralta. However, team officials have suggested that Brandon Woodruff accepting the team’s $22.025 million qualifying offer doesn’t necessarily signal an intention to move Peralta.

Peralta’s $8 million salary for the upcoming season is an attractive asset, both for the Brewers and potential trade partners. According to MLB Trade Rumors, trading reliever Trevor Megill could free up $4.2 million through arbitration, while dealing right-handed reliever Nick Mears would save $1.6 million. However, those savings alone may not be enough to significantly alter the team’s financial outlook, and the Brewers are unlikely to trade both pitchers.

The most effective way for Milwaukee to create substantial payroll space appears to be renegotiating a multi-year contract with Woodruff at a lower average annual value. This would alleviate immediate financial pressure and, considering Peralta’s potential to become a free agent after this season, securing Woodruff long-term would provide stability to the starting rotation.
