Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night in California on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to law enforcement sources. The arrest marks a new challenge for the pop star, who recently regained control of her life after a lengthy conservatorship.
Spears was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol and initially held before being released early Thursday morning around 6:00 a.m., officials confirmed.
The California Highway Patrol pulled Spears over in Ventura County, approximately 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles, after receiving reports of someone driving erratically. A concerned driver had called 911, prompting the investigation.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for Spears told NBC4 Investigates. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the assist and support she needs during this difficult time.”
The representative added that Spears’ sons will be spending time with her, and loved ones are working on a plan to support her well-being.
Spears, 44, is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4. The arrest is reportedly alcohol- and drug-related, though further details have not yet been released. This incident comes over three years after Spears’ conservatorship was terminated in 2021, a legal battle that brought intense scrutiny to her personal life.
