Budapest –
Budapest has been named the dirtiest city in the world, according to a new report examining traveler reviews. The ranking, compiled by global luggage storage company Radical Storage, also found that Italy accounted for four of the ten cities listed as having the most cleanliness issues.
The report analyzed approximately 70,000 Google reviews from the 10 most popular tourist attractions in each of 100 cities featured on Euromonitor’s Top 100 City Destinations list. The findings highlight a growing concern about urban cleanliness as tourism rebounds globally.

Radical Storage assessed the frequency of the words “clean” and “dirty” in the reviews. To ensure accuracy, reviews with insufficient text were excluded, phrases like “not clean” or “not dirty” were filtered out, and only English-language reviews were considered. The analysis revealed that over 37.9% of reviews mentioning Budapest referenced dirtiness or poor maintenance.
The report attributes the issue to a waste management system struggling to keep pace with a surge in tourism. Hungary’s tourism industry saw an 8.3% increase in September, with Budapest experiencing a 12% jump compared to the same month in 2024.
Rome secured the second spot on the list, with 35.7% of reviews citing cleanliness concerns. Travelers frequently discuss the issue in online forums, with some long-time visitors noting a consistent problem.
“I’ve visited Rome (from Ireland) three times in 20 years. From what I’ve seen, the city is consistently dirty,” one Reddit user commented.
“Rome is a beautiful city, but the garbage problem is disgusting,” another user added. Social media platforms are also filled with images of overflowing trash, sometimes attracting wildlife, including wild boars searching for food.
Las Vegas, Nevada, in the United States, came in third, with around 31% of reviews highlighting cleanliness issues. Radical Storage noted that maintaining cleanliness in a city operating 24/7 presents a significant challenge.
Despite the challenges, local authorities have implemented initiatives like Pick It Up Las Vegas, which focuses on cleaning storm drains, tunnels, streets, and parks. However, the city’s online reputation remains tarnished, with one TripAdvisor user describing it as “a complete dumping ground with all sorts of filth,” and noting a visible homeless population in various areas.
Florence, Italy, ranked fourth on the list, followed by Paris, France, in fifth place.
Rounding out the top ten, Milan, Italy, was sixth, and Verona, Italy, was seventh, giving Italy a significant presence on the list of dirtiest cities.
