EU Launches 2026 Circular Economy Business Awards for African SMEs
The European Union’s Circular Economy Resource Centre (EU CERC) opened applications today for its 2026 Business Awards, offering recognition and up to €10,000 in funding to African micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) demonstrating innovative circular economy practices.
The awards, co-funded by the European Commission and the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and managed by Sitra and Enabel, aim to accelerate the adoption of circular business models globally. Eligible businesses must showcase demonstrable circular impact, such as waste-to-resource initiatives, remanufacturing, circular design, or extended product lifecycles. Participating companies can gain visibility with international funders and policymakers, access coaching, and potentially secure prize money.
This year’s edition features two specific tracks: the Young Woman Entrepreneur Award, recognizing companies led by female founders, and a Sectoral Award for MSMEs in the electronics & ICT sector. Applicants are encouraged to quantify their circular economy impact with metrics and align their submissions with the appropriate track for consideration. More information on the EU CERC awards can be found on the official website. The growing focus on circular economies is driven by the need to reduce waste and promote sustainable resource management, as highlighted by the United Nations Environment Programme.
The call for applications launched on November 3, 2025, with regional and track-specific deadlines to follow in the coming months. EU CERC officials stated that even shortlisted applicants can benefit from the exposure and feedback provided throughout the process.
