Konami has confirmed that Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse will not be a roguelike or roguelite game, opting instead for a traditional gameplay experience reminiscent of the classic titles in the long-running series. The announcement, made during Sony’s State of Play event last month, comes as Konami celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Castlevania franchise.
The company clarified in a statement to The Verge earlier this week that development is being done in collaboration with Motion Twin, the studio behind Dead Cells. Despite Motion Twin’s expertise in the roguelike genre, Konami emphasized that the new project will not follow that formula.
“Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is a 2D action-exploration game where players will be able to explore vast, carefully designed maps. It is not a roguelike or roguelite,” said Tommy Williams of Konami.
The clarification has sparked discussion among fans. One Reddit user commented, “Well now I’m interested. I’m tired of Metroidvanias that are as well roguelikes or roguelites or even Soulslikes.” Another user simply stated, “Honestly, I don’t want it to be different.” The news signals a return to form for the franchise, potentially appealing to long-time fans who prefer a more structured experience.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is scheduled for release later this year on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and is currently available for pre-order.
