Jakarta – Sony Pictures is moving forward with a new installment in the Charlie’s Angels franchise, officially entering early development on a feature film.

The studio is looking to revitalize the iconic action-comedy series, a cornerstone of female empowerment in entertainment for nearly five decades.

To spearhead the project, Sony has tapped screenwriter Pete Chiarelli, known for his function blending comedy and drama. Chiarelli penned the script for the Sandra Bullock hit The Proposal and the adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians.

According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Drew Barrymore may return behind the camera. Her production company, Flower Films, is reportedly in talks to produce the new film.

Flower Films was the primary production company behind the successful Charlie’s Angels films released in 2000 and 2003, both of which starred Barrymore alongside Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu.

Barrymore’s potential involvement is expected to recapture the spirit and energy that some felt was missing from previous iterations.

As of now, Sony Pictures is keeping details under wraps regarding the director and the actresses who will accept on the roles of the new “Angels.”

Industry observers have reacted positively to Chiarelli’s appointment, viewing Sony’s reboot as a course correction following the 2019 film directed by Elizabeth Banks.

That film, starring Kristen Stewart, did not perform well commercially and received mixed reviews. Critics often felt it lacked the lightheartedness that defined the Charlie’s Angels brand. [1]

The Charlie’s Angels franchise began with the popular 1976 television series starring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith.

The series saw a resurgence in the early 2000s with films directed by McG, before experiencing a period of fluctuation, including a short-lived television series in 2011.

With Pete Chiarelli and the possible return of Drew Barrymore, fans are anticipating a return to the franchise’s roots – an entertaining action-comedy with a modern twist.

The focus is expected to be on the chemistry between the three leads, a key element that made the early 2000s films so beloved.

The latest Charlie’s Angels project is currently in early development, and casting announcements are anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027.

News of the reboot comes as Sony Pictures looks to capitalize on established franchises in a competitive entertainment landscape. [2] [3]
