Chery is expanding its presence in the Indonesian automotive market with the launch of Lepas, a new sub-brand debuting at the Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2025. The all-new marque will enter the market with the L8 SUV, showcasing a design philosophy described as “Leopard Aesthetics.” This launch signifies Chery’s continued global expansion and aims to cater to growing SUV demand with a focus on distinctive styling and advanced technology.
Lepas, a new sub-brand of Chery Group, is making its debut in Indonesia with a launch event at the Gaikindo Jakarta Auto Week (GJAW) 2025, held November 21–30 at ICE BSD. The auto show will serve as the official platform for the brand to unveil its flagship SUV, the Lepas L8.
Beyond introducing the brand to the Indonesian market, Lepas is positioning the L8 as a key product, emphasizing a distinctive design language and a suite of premium technologies. The company is offering attendees hands-on experiences, including exclusive test drive opportunities.
Official Debut and Design Philosophy
At Hall 8C of GJAW 2025, Lepas is showcasing three core brand pillars: the ‘Leopard Aesthetics’ design philosophy, the ‘Drive Your Elegance’ brand tagline, and a foundation of advanced technology. According to Lepas Head of Marketing, Arga Simanjuntak, the L8 incorporates the movements and characteristics of a leopard to achieve a balance of strength, serenity, and precision.
The Lepas L8 measures 4.688 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2.800 mm, offering flexible seating for five passengers. The interior is designed to evoke a sense of calm, utilizing natural-toned materials to create a premium feel. The launch comes as Chery expands its global footprint, seeking to capitalize on growing SUV demand.
Every line and proportion of the L8’s bodywork is designed to create a modern and assertive silhouette. Arga emphasized that the design goal wasn’t simply to follow global trends, but to offer a fresh perspective on how an SUV can express elegance without being ostentatious.
Key features include a 13.2-inch vertical touchscreen display, an electric panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package encompassing Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Intelligent Parking Assist.
The L8 was previously shown at GIIAS 2025 in a left-hand drive configuration. For GJAW, Lepas indicated that the vehicles on display are likely equipped for right-hand drive, aligning with the Indonesian market.
Lepas Event Specialist, Fikri, stated that the company will showcase two models at the exhibition, including a hybrid L8 variant. This signals the brand’s readiness to offer choices tailored to local consumer preferences.
Driving Technology and Visitor Experience
Lepas confirmed that the L8 will not be a static display only. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the vehicle firsthand through exclusive test drives offered at the event.
From a technical standpoint, the L8 focuses on comfort and efficiency, with an emphasis on noise reduction, ride stability, and a natural power response. The model utilizes the T1X modular platform, also used in the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8, and Omoda lines, promising stability and efficient performance.
Engine Options and Line-Up
Regarding powertrain options, the official Chery Lepas website states that the L8 is planned to be available with several engine choices. These include a 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option, and a fully electric (EV) version planned for a later phase.
Transmission options include a 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT) automatic unit with either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. Final technical specifications and official pricing have not yet been announced by Lepas.
With a combination of a distinctive design, premium features, and powertrain variety, Lepas aims to attract attention at GJAW 2025 and solidify its initial steps in the Indonesian market.
