Moldava nad Bodvou, Slovakia – Authorities are investigating the death of a child whose body was discovered in the Bodva River on Saturday, February 14, 2026. The tragic discovery has prompted a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Police responded to a report received Saturday afternoon regarding an object or body resembling a modest child spotted in the river. The initial caller noted that the strong current made positive identification tricky.

Police units, firefighters, and paramedics were dispatched to the scene and, after approximately 90 minutes of searching, located the child’s body. “Despite the rapid response and maximum effort of the intervening components, it was no longer possible to help the minor,” said police spokesperson Jana Illésová.

A criminal investigation has been launched into the case, and a medical examiner has been called to the scene. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of death. “The police are intensively investigating the case and are continuing to carry out all necessary actions. Due to the sensitivity and tragic outcome of the event, it is not possible to provide further information,” Illésová added. The case underscores the potential dangers of fast-moving rivers, particularly for young children.
