A fresh three-part documentary series, “China-Laos Railway Journey,” is scheduled to premiere on April 14, 2026, broadcasting simultaneously on China Central Television (CCTV) and the National Television of Laos. The series will also be released across various provincial satellite channels and major streaming platforms, including iQIYI, Youku, Tencent, and Bilibili.
The 75-minute production follows British photographer Thomas Heaton as he travels via international passenger train from Kunming, China, to Vientiane, Laos. Through Heaton’s perspective, the documentary explores the construction of the railway and the intricacies of its operation and maintenance. The journey also highlights the scenery, traditional cultures, and daily lives across seven towns and villages in both countries.
The project underscores the growing international interest in the regional infrastructure and its impact on connectivity. The documentary was produced by Singapore-based Prism Film & Media and co-produced by National Geographic, the People’s Railway Press Co., Ltd., the Fifth Continent Communication Center, and Yunnan Broadcasting Corporation. A joint international production team spent six months in 2025 conducting research and filming, crossing the border between China and Laos three times to complete the project.
Before its official premiere in China and Laos, the series gained significant traction globally. It first aired on National Geographic’s South Asia channel on December 13, 2025, where it ranked first in its time slot for all age groups, reaching 12.86 million viewers with a 0.117 rating. Starting March 6, 2026, the documentary expanded to National Geographic’s networks in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa.
In Europe, the series reached 20.18 million viewers. It achieved a 0.177 rating in Germany, ranking first in its time slot, and a 0.203 rating in France, where it ranked second. To date, the documentary has reached over 100 million households across more than 100 countries and regions.
The series has also generated buzz on social media, where Thomas Heaton shared promotional clips. On platforms like Instagram and Facebook, international audiences expressed strong interest in the journey, with viewers noting they “hope to have the opportunity to seize this train” and describing it as “a wonderful journey.”
