China Opens London World Table Tennis Championships with Victory, but Struggles Against England Raise Questions

The Chinese men’s national team secured a 3-0 victory over host nation England in their opening group stage match of the 2026 London World Team Table Tennis Championships on May 2, 2026. While the defending champions successfully navigated their first hurdle, the match was far more turbulent than expected, revealing unexpected vulnerabilities against lower-ranked opponents.

The overall result was never in doubt, but the path to victory was uneven. China’s campaign began with a dominant performance from Lin Shidong, who swept his opponent 3-0 to provide an early cushion for the team.

However, the momentum shifted as the match progressed. World No. 1 Wang Chuqin faced a surprising challenge from England’s Samuel Walker, ranked No. 209. Despite the massive gap in standings, Walker managed to push the top seed, claiming the third set with a narrow 13-11 win. Wang ultimately secured the match 3-1, but the slip-up provided an early sign of resistance from the home crowd.

The most significant scare came in the clash between Liang Jingkun and Connor Green. Liang, currently ranked No. 21 in the world, found himself in a grueling battle against Green, who holds a world ranking of 182. Green managed to disrupt Liang’s rhythm, taking the second set 11-5 and the fourth set 11-8, forcing the match into a decisive fifth set. Liang eventually prevailed 3-2, but the struggle highlighted a stark contrast in performance compared to the team’s usual standards.

This opening result stands in contrast to the performance of the Chinese women’s team, who also opened their tournament with a victory but did so with three flawless 3-0 individual match wins. For the men’s side, dropping three total sets in their first outing serves as a wake-up call.

While the 3-0 team win keeps China on track for another title defense, the ability of lower-ranked English players to push world-class athletes to the brink suggests a competitive atmosphere in London. For Wang Chuqin and Liang Jingkun, the victory provides a necessary start, but the match offers critical data for adjustment as they move deeper into the tournament.
