South Korean Snowboarder Choi Gaon Claims Historic Olympic Gold

MILAN-CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy – Choi Gaon, representing South Korea, has made history at the 2026 Winter Olympics, securing the gold medal in the women’s halfpipe event. The 17-year-old’s winning score of 90.25 points edged out Chloe Kim of the United States, who finished with 88.00 points, marking the first time a South Korean snowboarder has reached the top of the Olympic podium.

Choi’s victory on February 13th (Korean time) at the Livigno Snowpark not only secured the first gold medal for the South Korean team at these Games, but likewise set a new record as the youngest Olympic champion in the event, surpassing Chloe Kim’s previous record set at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. This win is a significant moment for the growing sport of snowboarding in South Korea.

Born on November 3, 2008, in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, Choi Gaon began snowboarding at a young age, influenced by her parents, both avid snowboard enthusiasts. She transferred to Sehwa Girls’ Middle School to focus on her training and currently attends Sehwa Girls’ High School.

Prior to her Olympic triumph, Choi Gaon had already established herself as a rising star in the snowboarding world. In January 2023, she made her debut on the X Games stage, winning the women’s superpipe competition – a first for a South Korean snowboarder. She followed that success with a victory at the U.S. DuTour women’s snowboard superpipe in February 2023, achieving a score of 98.33 out of 100.

Following her gold medal win, Choi Gaon expressed her excitement to return home, stating, “I want to go back quickly and eat the meal my grandmother makes.” This sentiment reflects the strong support system that has propelled her to the pinnacle of her sport.

The young athlete’s success has sparked celebrations throughout South Korea, with the Korea Policy Briefing offering congratulations on the historic achievement.

Despite her competitive drive, Choi Gaon also revealed a more relaxed side, mentioning her desire to have a “pajama party” with friends back home, as reported by v.daum.net. This blend of fierce determination and youthful exuberance has quickly made her a fan favorite.

Choi Gaon’s journey to Olympic gold is a testament to her dedication and talent, and her victory is sure to inspire a new generation of snowboarders in South Korea and beyond. You can find more about Choi Gaon on Namuwiki and Wikipedia.
