Speculation is mounting regarding the political future of Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Akın, as reports surface of potential overtures to the ruling Justice and Progress party (AKP). This situation unfolds amid a period of notable political realignment in Turkey, and a shift could significantly alter the power dynamics within the balıkesir region.

A Turkish mayor is facing speculation about a potential party switch, fueled by recent comments and a reported exchange with a high-ranking official. Balıkesir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ahmet Akın, a member of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), is rumored to be considering joining the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), a move that could reshape the political landscape in the region.

“HE ASKED IF I SHOULD EXTEND MY GREETINGS TO THE PRESIDENT”

The discussion surrounding a possible defection began after AKP 26th Term Member of Parliament Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ilıcalı described a recent phone conversation with Akın. Ilıcalı told TV100 that he reached out to Akın to offer condolences following the death of the mayor’s mother-in-law.

“I asked Ahmet Bey, ‘Should I extend your greetings to the President?’ He said, ‘Please extend my greetings and respects. I sincerely send my prayers.’” Ilıcalı recounted.

Ilıcalı further explained the context of the conversation, stating, “Our President was receiving a group of parliamentarians from the Turkey Parliamentarians Association Istanbul Branch at Dolmabahçe. I was chatting with Yavuz Subaşı at the entrance when I learned about Ahmet Akın Bey’s mother-in-law passing away, and that he was currently in Umrah. I called Ahmet Akın Bey to offer my condolences. Yavuz Bey was also present.

“I asked Ahmet Akın Bey, ‘Should I extend your greetings to the President?’ And he responded, ‘Please extend my greetings and respects. I sincerely send my prayers.’”

“I HAVE RESPECT FOR THE HEAD OF MY STATE”

According to Ilıcalı, Akın also expressed respect for President Erdoğan during the call. “Akın Bey said, ‘Mustafa ağabey, I am someone who does what is necessary for my state and nation. I also have respect for the head of my state. I am committed to serving my people. I received votes from every party when I was elected mayor. I removed my party badge and am trying to serve.’ He then sent his love and respect to the President again. People are interpreting this as a party switch, but he didn’t express that to me during our conversation.”

The reported exchange has prompted observers to consider the potential implications for both the CHP and the AKP, as well as the future of local governance in Balıkesir. The situation underscores the ongoing political maneuvering within Turkey’s complex political system.
