Anthropic Debuts Claude Mythos Preview: A High-Stakes Leap in Cybersecurity AI

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Mythos Preview, its most advanced frontier model to date, marking a significant leap in performance over its predecessor, Claude Opus 4.6. While the model demonstrates striking improvements across various evaluation benchmarks, its specialized capabilities in identifying software security flaws have prompted the company to implement strict access controls.

The model’s ability to pinpoint weaknesses and vulnerabilities within software is so potent that Anthropic is limiting its rollout to prevent exploitation by malicious actors. This cautious approach underscores the growing tension between AI innovation and global cybersecurity risks.

To manage these risks, Anthropic has launched Project Glasswing, a latest cybersecurity initiative. Through this program, a select group of approximately 40 companies will be granted access to the model exclusively for defensive security operations. Initial launch partners include industry giants such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Google, Apple, and Nvidia, alongside specialized security firms like CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks.

“There was a lot of internal deliberation,” Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s head of research product management, told CNBC. “We really do view this as a first step for giving a lot of cyber defenders a head start on a topic that will be increasingly vital.”

The announcement follows a period of market volatility after details of the model were discovered in a public data cache. Reports regarding the model’s advanced cyber capabilities led to a decline in cybersecurity stocks, as investors weighed the potential risks against the defensive benefits.

The strategic decision to restrict the model’s availability highlights the critical importance of “defensive AI” in the current technological landscape. By partnering with major infrastructure and security providers, Anthropic aims to fortify digital defenses before the model’s capabilities can be weaponized.
